Leadership Position Descriptions
Drum Major:
The Hayfield Marching Hawks Drum Major(s) is the top student leader in the marching band and serves as the most visible person in the band program. The drum major is responsible, and held accountable, for the every-day operation of the marching band program. The drum major is expected to be present at all rehearsals and performances and to participate at all events and fundraisers throughout the season. They will be responsible for organizing motivational activities, such as band camp spirit week. Each rehearsal, the Drum Major will work closely with the band director, instructional staff, captains, officers, and section leaders to meet the goals and expectations set for the day. They are responsible for communicating with band members through social media and direct contact to ensure all members are informed or rehearsals, performances, or other events.
The Drum Major will also serve as the conductor for the 2020 show. Therefore, the Drum Major should be knowledgeable of all parts in the show, regardless of the instrument. The Drum Major will also lead the band in warm-ups and rehearsals, both music and visual, and will, therefore, need to know the correct format and expectations for each. The Drum Major will also conduct the band in the stands during football games and will need a basic knowledge of the rules of the game. The Drum Major will also need to have a firm grasp on all stand tunes and should be able to rehearse them with the ensemble.
Captains:
The captains’ main job is to communicate with the drum major and section leaders, or their section members, the expectations and goals for each rehearsal/event. The brass and woodwind captains will need to delegate assignments to section leaders throughout rehearsals and will need to take direction from the drum major, instructional staff, and band director. Captains should also be confident giving direct feedback to members of each section they are responsible for.
During rehearsals, captains may be asked to rehearse their group, and therefore must be familiar with all parts and/or choreography in their distinction. Captains have the option of scheduling sectionals on non-rehearsal days to include any member of their group, as long as the sectional is planned in advance.
Section Leaders:
Section Leaders work with their individual sections to make sure goals and expectations are being met. Section leaders will take direction from their captains and drum major on the daily operation of rehearsals. Section leaders will be responsible for teaching music and helping to teach drill and choreography, and therefore must be familiar with all parts in their section. Each section leader will assist their respective captain in passing off show music for their section. Section leaders are also responsible for organizing the making of section t-shirts before the Marching Hawk Parent Preview picnic on August 15, 2020.

Officer Descriptions
- Uniform Manager - Main responsibilities include assisting band boosters with inventory on performance days, uniform inspections before performances, and assisting with uniform return and storage.
- Librarian - Responsible for maintaining stock of extra music and coordinate sheets as required. Will need to create a storage system for parts and drill.
- Logistics Officer(s) - Oversees transport of all materials required for rehearsals and performances, including back speaker, yard markers, pit equipment, props, etc. Will oversee the creation and operation of the Logistics Crew.
